Everything that goes down a drain goes to the septic tank (i.e. doing a load of laundry; taking a bath; using the restroom). The liquids are constantly being dispersed throughout the drainfield & absorbed below ground into the soil. The solids (poop) accumulate inside of the septic tank & should be emptied every 3 years depending on how active your home is.
It is normal to pump a tank on Monday & for it to appear to be “full” by Friday. Tanks operate on full with the water level resting just below the inlet and outlet pipes. Remember, only the solids accumulate in the tank. Once the liquid level reaches the outlet pipe to the drainfield it exits the tank and is dispersed throughout the field.
When a drainfield is in failure, the liquid can no longer be adequately dispersed and the septic tank begins to act like a cup. With nowhere for the liquid to go, you will eventually have a backup inside and/or outside of the home. Additionally, the waste can begin to rise to the surface of the ground above the drainfield instead of going below as it is designed to do. In this instance, you may notice an area of your yard that is greener and more lush than the surrounding areas. Just because a system is in failure doesn't mean you will have any issues inside of your home, instead it could be negatively impacting the environment as a whole.
Because the ultimate product ends up back in our waterways it is important to maintain your system properly and not allow the solids (poop) to accumulate enough that it begins to enter the drainfield.
Residential drainfields have a lifespan of 20-30 years (with proper maintenance) and the cost of replacement can range anywhere from $5,500-$15,000+. This is why you should always have a septic inspection before purchasing a home.
*A "lift station" may be required if the drain field is located far away from the septic tank or if the topography of the area makes the septic tank sit lower than the drain field. This tank is located in between the septic tank and the drain field and has a control unit (alarm) and submersible pump that forces the wastewater out to the drainfield.
