Don't Get Left Half Full!

When it comes time to service a septic system, many homeowners mistakenly think that all septic contractors are the same. This could not be farther from the truth, since not all companies have the integrity of Brandon Septic. Sadly, many homeowners pay full price and only get half the job done.

Companies must pay per gallon to dispose of your waste so no matter which company you go with make sure your tank is emptied completely. If your system is less than 20 years old you have a “baffled’ or multi-compartment tank. This means there are two separate sides that should be exposed and pumped out completely. If you have only been having one compartment emptied, your system has not been properly maintained.

How Your Septic System Works

Most septic systems consist of two parts; a septic tank and a soil absorption system (aka drain/leach field). The entire system is connected via underground pipes and everything that goes down a drain, goes to the septic. Toilets, sinks, tubs, laundry, etc.

The septic tank holds the wastewater long enough to let the solids settle, and the fats, oils, and greases float to the top. Some of the solids are decomposed by the bacteria in the tank. Effluent from the middle layer flows out into the drainfield for further treatment in the soil where it is absorbed and eventually makes its way into the aquifer.

Septic systems can contribute to water contamination for many reasons including irregular pumping, poor design, faulty construction, etc. This is why it is so important to regularly have your tank emptied & if you are on a well, to test your drinking water regularly to verify it is clean and free from contamination.

Each septic system is individually designed for the amount of wastewater your family generates. If you frequently host visitors or have a large family you will want to ensure your drainfield is large enough to accommodate your needs.

A "lift station" may be required if the drainfield is located far away from the septic tank or if the topography of the area makes the septic tank sit lower than the drain field. The lift station tank is located in between the septic tank and the drain field and has a control unit (alarm) and submersible pump that forces the wastewater out to the drainfield.

Residential drainfields have an average lifespan of ~20 years-with proper maintenance-and the cost of replacement can range anywhere from $5,500-$15,000+. This is why you should always have a septic inspection before purchasing a home.
